How many unread emails are in your inbox, with a button that opens a new email.
Tile: Gmail - in the widget picker under Online & Mail.
Before you start
- A Google account. Google requires every app that reads Gmail to bring its own Google Cloud client, so you make one - it is free and takes about five minutes.
Steps
- Open the Google Cloud console and create a project. Any name.
- Go to APIs & Services → Library, find Gmail API and click Enable.
- Open Google Auth Platform (the OAuth consent screen), click Get started, enter an app name and your email, choose External, and finish.
- Under Audience → Test users, add your own Gmail address.
- Under Clients, create a client of type Desktop app, and copy its Client ID and Client secret.
- In lumabar, right-click the dock, choose Widgets…, open Online & Mail and click Gmail to add it.
- Click the new tile on the dock. Its card opens.
- Fill in the card as shown below and press Save, then Sign in with Google. lumabar checks it with one real read - if anything is wrong, the card says what.
What to enter
| Field on the card | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Client ID | The Desktop app client's ID |
| Client secret | Its secret |
Good to know
- After Save, press Sign in with Google. Google shows that it has not verified the app - it is your own app, so choose to continue - and asks to let it read your email.
- lumabar asks only to read Gmail: it counts unread mail and never sends, changes or deletes anything.
- While your Google app is in testing, Google signs you out after 7 days. Sign in again from the tile.
If it doesn't connect
The card says what went wrong, in words like these:
“Access blocked: the app has not completed verification”
Add your own Gmail address under Audience → Test users.

Privacy
The sign-in is stored only on this PC and is used only to read from Gmail. To remove it, right-click the tile and choose Logout.
