Track your Claude and ChatGPT usage limits from the desktop

Updated

If you use Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini for real work, you know the moment: a message saying you're out until later. The limits exist for good reasons, but you can't see them until you hit them - Claude's session and weekly limits, ChatGPT's 5-hour and weekly Codex windows - each tucked away inside its own app.

lumabar puts them on your taskbar, so you can pace yourself instead of being surprised.

The AI limits lumabar shows

  • Claude Usage - your current session limit as a percentage, and when it resets.
  • Claude Plan Usage - session and weekly limits side by side, plus your most-used model.
  • ChatGPT Usage - your plan's Codex limits: the 5-hour window and the weekly one.
  • Gemini Usage - the Gemini CLI quota for Pro and Flash.
  • Grok Usage - SuperGrok credits used.
  • DeepSeek Balance - your balance, today's spend and the last 7 days.
  • GLM Usage - the Z.ai / Zhipu Coding Plan windows.
  • OpenCode Usage - tokens and cost from OpenCode's local history.

How the tiles get your numbers

There is nothing to sign in to inside lumabar for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok. Each of those tiles reads the sign-in that the vendor's own command-line tool already keeps on your PC - Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Grok CLI - and asks that vendor for your usage, just as the tool itself does. lumabar only reads those files; it never changes, refreshes on disk or copies them.

DeepSeek and GLM use an API key you paste into the tile. OpenCode is read from its local database, without going online.

Anthropic and OpenAI don't publish an official usage API. These tiles use the same endpoints the vendors' own tools call, so they can change without notice - when one does, the tile says it can't connect rather than showing a wrong number.

Set it up

  1. Install the vendor's command-line tool and sign in once - Claude Code for Claude, Codex for ChatGPT.
  2. In lumabar, right-click the dock → Widgets… → AI, and add the tiles you want.
  3. The numbers appear within a minute and refresh about once a minute after that.

Reading the numbers

A limit tile shows how much of the window you've used and when it resets. Claude has two windows that matter: the session limit, which resets after a few hours, and the weekly limit, which caps the total. If the weekly number climbs faster than the week goes by, ease off early instead of losing the last day.

If a tile can't connect

  • Check that the vendor's tool still works on its own. Sign-ins expire: run claude and use /login in Claude Code, or run codex login for Codex.
  • Once the tool is signed in again, the tile picks the new sign-in up on its next refresh - there is nothing to change in lumabar.
  • For DeepSeek and GLM, check that the key you pasted is still active in that service's dashboard.

Privacy

Sign-ins and keys stay on your PC. Requests go straight from your PC to Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or xAI - lumabar has no server in between and collects no telemetry. More on how lumabar handles your keys.

Beyond AI

The same dock can hold the rest of your working day: a pomodoro timer, your todos and next event, CPU and RAM while a model runs locally, and revenue from Stripe or Polar if you sell a product. See every widget.
